The history of Parafield Gardens, a charming suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, is a tale that spans centuries and reflects the evolution of this residential community. Let's dive into the rich history of this suburb and highlight its indigenous roots, early development, and educational institutions.
Long before European settlers arrived, the Kaurna people inhabited the land that is now known as Parafield Gardens. Evidence of their presence can be found in an Aboriginal heritage site within the Greenfield Industrial Estate, suggesting that Aboriginal communities may have thrived in this area for thousands of years.
The suburb began as a subdivision of section 2258 of the Hundred of Yatala. This subdivision encompassed land to the south of the Little Para River and Kings Road, as well as the northeast portion of what is now Salisbury Highway. In 1881, the government proposed the establishment of a general cemetery within the subdivision, but this plan was ultimately abandoned by 1906. Instead, the land within the subdivision started to take on a new purpose.
Initially, the land was used as an experimental agricultural farm. However, in 1911, it transformed into a poultry farm known as Parafield Farm. This shift marked a significant change in land utilization, foreshadowing the suburb's transition from agricultural to residential.
In 1958, Matters & Co. seized an opportunity to offer residential land in the Parafield Gardens area. This residential zone was bounded by Salisbury Highway, Shepherdson Road, Sunderland Avenue, and Catalina Avenue. The 1970s saw the South Australian Housing Trust embark on the construction of properties in this burgeoning neighborhood. Sometime between then and the turn of the millennium, the suburb officially adopted the name "Parafield Gardens."
In the early 2000s, the Pine Lakes Estate was established to the southwest of the intersection of Salisbury Highway and Kings Road. This development brought a fresh wave of growth and modernization to Parafield Gardens, adding to the diversity of its housing options.
